Vapour permeability of Biodegradable plastics

Although the vapour permeabilities of biodegradable plastic films (bioplastics*) are improving, they don't yet reach those of more conventional films and thus lead to shorter shelf lives, especially in MAP (Modified Atmosphere Packaging) applications, including MAP atmospheres that are self-generated by the produce they hold.   Another problem is, as they are designed to degrade due to the presence of moisture, their permeability will actually change over time. This means they need to be optimised.

Versaperm's film and laminate permeability testing systems can measure vapour permeability under a wide range of temperatures for water vapour, oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and every other gas used in MAP packaging to both optimise these properties for any application and to determine how this varies over time due to the biodegrading presence of moisture.

Importantly the system can also measure the vapour permeability for ethylene - the plant hormone / gas responsible for ripening.

The Versaperm multi-gas meter provides accurate results which are recorded and displayed on the instrument's touch-screen for further analysis. Optionally the instrument can measure the concentration of virtually any gas at temperatures over --0oC and above the melting point of conventional plastic.

A technical consultancy and laboratory-based permeability testing service is available from Versaperm for companies that don't have the production throughput to require a dedicated instrument.
